How Studying Abroad Has Impacted Me
Studying abroad has impacted me in so many ways. It has pushed me to be more confident, independent, and collaborative. It has taught me to think more critically about social issues and what we can do to solve them. I was able to come back with a global perspective that I did not have before. Speaking with and, most importantly, learning from the Aboriginal people of Australia was eye-opening; it made me aware of social issues that Australia has that I had never known about. It made me think about how our country is progressive in some ways and how we could learn from other countries in other ways. Studying abroad taught me about the social dynamics of other countries and the differences in their work-life balance and social justice systems. This opportunity highlighted the importance of helping and bringing to light the issues that plague marginalized communities. It taught me the importance of addressing systemic issues and how they, too, exist even in the most progressive of countries. I learned the importance of being a mindful tourist and supporting local economic growth. Lastly, I learned the importance of giving back in ways I had never thought of before. When going abroad and indulging in another country, it is important that we give and not just take. Giving back is important in our ability to collaborate and show that we are culturally aware of other's needs and are practicing sustainable tourism.
