Is Studying Abroad As A Disabled Person Feasible?

Disabilities are not a monolith. All disabilities are different, and all require different accommodations. When deciding to study abroad, this was my biggest reservation. It was important that the lead faculty understood my needs. Not every study abroad program will be for you; not every faculty may make you feel comfortable enough to study abroad, and that is okay. You will find the right program and faculty that supports and believes in you. My lead faculty member was Dr. Mallicoat, whom I cherish and appreciate very much. I still remember walking into her office, asking about the study abroad program, and asking if she felt it was something I could do. She made me feel confident and reassured me that she would accommodate me as best as possible. For me, the way Dr. Mallicoat went above and beyond is something that I will never forget. Studying Abroad was something I always dreamed of doing, but I thought it wasn't realistic given my disability. In retrospect, it was never true at all; I always worried about the possibility of burdening others with the accommodations I may need and never looked into it any further. Everyone needs accommodation at some point in time, and some more than others, and that is okay! I hope to give those with disabilities support and reassurance that they are worthy of experiences such as these because they are truly life-changing on not only a professional level but a very personal one as well. I would love to pass on the confidence that Dr. Mallicoat was able to instill in me to others.

Do not be afraid to ask! Believe in yourself :)
