Being A Responsible Tourist - Supporting Local Economy & Aboriginal Communities

Being a responsible tourist is imperative while studying abroad. If we want to promote tourism, we must do it sustainably. First, we must respect the culture and customs of our host country. Be sure to thoroughly research your host country so that you are able to be as culturally sensitive as possible.

Give more than you take! Limit the resources you are taking from a country. Be mindful of what you are using and how you are using it.

Shop locally; this means supporting mom-and-pop shops and buying souvenirs straight from the artists. Think about the souvenirs you purchase! Although it may seem pricier, it is better to choose quality over quantity. Try to buy things that are artisanally made and not mass-produced. Look for souvenirs that give back to marginalized communities.

Giving back: Do something where you are able to give back to your host country. Help volunteer with a local group in your host country that helps marginalized groups, endangered species, or social and environmental issues. Assisting nonprofits is a great way to give back to your host country
