Navigating Life Abroad With A Disability
Navigating life abroad with a disability will be very subjective. Every person navigates their disability differently, and not all disabilities are the same. As someone with a physical disability, it was imperative that I prepare for issues that I knew may arise while abroad.
A big concern of mine was transportation. As someone who has an artificial limb (leg), it was important that I prepare a plan for navigating the transit system in my host country. I made sure to discuss all of my needs with my lead faculty, and I planned for the unexpected.
It was important for me to fit an Uber/Taxi fund into my budget when deciding to travel as I knew it was probable for me to get tired quicker than my peers.
While using public transportation, I did my best to use elevators instead of stairs in order to preserve my walking energy.
I mentally prepared myself for the social or cultural attitudes my host country may have toward people with disabilities and researched what resources the local airport offered if I felt I needed them.
Staying calm and expecting the unexpected is essential when traveling abroad with a disability. Make sure to tailor your plan with careful consideration of your disability. Be transparent with your needs, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
